January 31st 2008 London – anarchic and enigmatic but an awesome city to reside in or visit so with a guide such as Time Out to help one out and help you uncover the best areas, what more could folk want?
The city is teeming with the best of everything – you’ll find amazing bars, sensational clubbing and eateries that’ll keep you returning for more every time. London is far and wide regarded as one of the “gay” centres of the world and is the base for the biggest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GBLT) community in Europe.
Thanks to the annual ‘Soho Pride’, ‘Pride London’ & the London Gay and Lesbian Film Festival – and probably some of the most astonishing gay nights out you will find on the planet – there is something to captivate you all year round.
A few of the greatest bars in the centre of London are situated in the acclaimed gay area of Soho. Soho is fantastic as everywhere is within walking distance, it never sleeps and you will regularly find bars open to keep you occupied until sunrise. ‘Profile’, a nice little bar off Old Compton Street (London’s ‘Gay’ street), is renowned for its fabulous cocktails and ambiance. There’s also ‘Friendly Society’ which is as genial as the name suggests, drinks are a little dear but it can be a marvellous experience - there is an excellent bunch of people and the DJs are amazing.
Further famous bars are Green Carnation, Bar Code, Freedom, The Edge, G-A-Y Bar, Village, Ku Bar, Candy Bar, The Yard and the more traditional Compton’s and Admiral Duncan, to name just a few. There’s lots of info about London in Time Out.
A few of the best venues are also the most renowned locations. Folk couldn’t possibly enjoy a night out in the city should they are visiting without going to G-A-Y, generally described as the stereotypical camp Mecca. Great melodies, awesome people and cheap drinks, - the night-spot for any gay person in the city to explore! You also have Heaven, situated right off the Strand. This is a bit more dear but it comes with an incredible atmosphere and has sufficient areas to pamper every fancy in sounds.
More places comprise of Soho Revue Bar and Shadow Lounge. The future area for the more resolute clubbers is a tiny bit further out in Vauxhall. Some great late-night / early hours places and bars include Area, Crash, Barcode Vauxhall and Fire along with special nights at Club Coliseum and the world class Vauxhall Tavern.
